Leaving Larga Vista:
Tour of Ranch Foods Direct supplier inspires
After a drive down I-25 exploring the geology of the Pikes Peak region and how it makes the Arkansas Valley a fertile growing area, visitors were greeted by the farm dogs and a growing Wiley family. Doug Wiley is a 3rd generation farmer with a Master’s in Soil Studies from Colorado State University. He always knew he would work his family’s land and has seen many changes over the years. His grandfather started with a dairy, meeting the needs of the growing community. As demands grew and corporate ideals developed, the Wiley farm went through changes. In the last year and a half, Doug has brought back the dairy and real milk production to compliment his chemical-free produce (which is sold in season at the Colorado Farm and Arts Market and at Ranch Foods Direct.)
The Jersey cows are more than just milk producers: they are instrumental in bringing the land back into production and a healthy state. To demonstrate the change, Doug took the group on a walkabout that showcased the native grasses that were thriving thanks to environmental stewardship of the land with the cows. The Jerseys trotted past the group, out to pasture and to graze. Larga Vista adheres to the Holistic Management Strategies of Allan Savory, who spoke in Colorado Springs this past year, and Joel Salatin, who farms in Virginia. These methods are proven environmental saviors.
The tour concluded with a raw milk and butter tasting. Despite the significant benefits of less tooth decay and more effective calcium absorption, the milk and butter were sweet treats!
Consider giving an unconventional gift
Consumers are continuing to explore food politics and want to know where their food comes from. For the community-minded health-conscious friend or family do not miss the very unconventional gift of a “cow share,” entitling them to farm fresh milk.
Ranch Foods Direct has always recognized the importance of small producers getting their product to market and supports the efforts of two local dairies to get their raw milk to customers. Consumers in Colorado Springs can purchase a cow share from Isle Farms in Ellicot or Larga Vista Ranch in Pueblo. Drinking fresh raw milk is an excellent way to improve individual health and environmental sustainability. (For more on this topic, CLICK HERE) |
