About five years ago, Kurt Reich of Divide traded in his job as a computer engineer to breed and race sled dogs and to spend more time at home raising his kids. Ever since, he’s been preparing to run Alaska’s famed Iditarod.

He plans to run the race to raise money for children’s charities. So far, he’s set up to benefit Compassion International of Colorado Springs and Children’s Ark of Manitou Springs.

He’s also financing the venture by raising eight litters of Siberian Huskies. “These are pets that I’ve bred, the other ones I’ve bred for racing,” he says. Huskies have great personalities. “Eskimoes had them in their igloos for 10,000 years so they are pretty good,” he says with a smile.

Kurt buys raw meat pet foods in bulk from Ranch Foods Direct. “This is the only place that can actually give me this kind of pet food,” he says. “The dogs need 10,000 calories a day when they are racing.” He says he likes everything about the Ranch Foods Direct product, including the fact that it is made from natural meats.
